Tile Types Guide: Advantages & Disadvantages

Choosing the right tile is an important part of any remodel or new construction project. Each type of tile has unique benefits and considerations depending on the space, budget, and desired look. Below is a guide to the most common tile types we install at Westin Tile.

Porcelain Tile

Best for: Floors, bathrooms, kitchens, high-traffic areas, outdoor use

Advantages: Extremely durable and long-lasting, Water-resistant and stain-resistant, Suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, Mimics natural stone or wood very well

Disadvantages: Higher cost than ceramic, Harder to cut and install, Can feel cold underfoot without radiant heating

Ceramic Tile

Best for: Bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes, light-traffic areas

Advantages: Affordable and widely available, Easy to clean and maintain, Comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, Lightweight and easy to install

Disadvantages: Less durable than porcelain, Can chip or crack under heavy impact, Not ideal for high-traffic or outdoor areas

Natural Stone Tile (Marble, Granite, Travertine, Slate)

Best for: Luxury spaces, bathrooms, entryways, feature areas

Advantages: Unique, natural appearance, Adds long-term value to your home, Durable when properly sealed, Timeless and elegant look

Disadvantages: Requires regular sealing and maintenance, More expensive than man-made tile, Some stones are porous and stain easily, Can be slippery when wet

Glass Tile

Best for: Backsplashes, accent walls, decorative features

Advantages: Reflects light, making spaces feel larger, Non-porous and stain-resistant, Modern, clean aesthetic, Easy to clean

Disadvantages: Not suitable for floors, Can scratch or crack, Higher material and installation cost, Shows fingerprints and smudges

Mosaic Tile

Best for: Showers, shower floors, backsplashes, accents

Advantages: Great slip resistance due to grout lines, Highly customizable designs, Ideal for curved or detailed areas, Adds visual interest

Disadvantages: More grout means more maintenance, Installation is more time-consuming, Can increase labor costs

Wood-Look Tile

Best for: Living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, entire homes

Advantages: Looks like real wood with superior durability, Waterproof and moisture-resistant, No warping or refinishing required, Works well with radiant heat

Disadvantages: Harder underfoot than real wood, Installation requires precision, Can be more expensive than laminate

Cement Tile

Best for: Feature floors, backsplashes, statement areas

Advantages: Bold, handcrafted appearance, Unique patterns and colors, Durable when sealed properly

Disadvantages: Requires sealing and maintenance, Can be costly, May show wear over time
